The 2009 George
W. Zinke Award in Economics Committee and the University of Colorado
Denver Department of Economics are pleased announce that Mr. John D.
Singleton has been selected to receive the 2009 George W. Zinke
Award in Economics for his paper,
“‘Money is a
Sterile Thing’: Martin Luther on the Immorality of Usury
Reconsidered.”
The George W. Zinke Award in Economics honors
the best paper written in the history of economic thought at any of
the University of Colorado campuses. The award, which honors the
late University of Colorado Professor George W. Zinke, has been
established by Professor Zinke’s family in order to encourage
economics students at the University of Colorado to develop a
passion for the history of economic thought and for advancing and
applying economics in order to foster social justice and the
betterment of humankind.
Mr. Singleton, the first recipient of the Zinke
Award, recently completed his first year in the Economics MA program
at the University of Colorado Denver. He was born and raised in the
Denver area and received his BA from Calvin College (Grand Rapids,
Michigan), with majors in economics (honors) and political science,
and a minor in philosophy. Upon completion of his MA studies at UC
Denver, he intends to pursue a PhD in economics, with the goal of
becoming an economics professor. Mr. Singleton’s paper on Luther’s
views on usury was lauded by the committee both for the depth of
scholarship embodied in it and the elegant writing style that it
evidences. Mr. Singleton’s paper was recently accepted for
publication in History of
Political Economy, the leading journal for scholarship in the
history of economic thought.
The 2009 George
W. Zinke Award carries with it a cash prize of $10,000. This Prize
is a recognition of the Zinke family’s generosity and their
commitment to supporting students who are interested in the history
of economic thought, the betterment of society, and the pursuit of
advanced studies in economics toward these ends.
The Zinke Award
competition is open to any advanced undergraduate or graduate
student at the University of Colorado. Though special consideration
is given to applicants who plan to continue their education in
economics following receipt of the award, students from other
relevant disciplines including, but not limited to history,
philosophy, political science, sociology, anthropology and law, are
eligible for the Zinke Award. The award may be used to advance the
recipient’s education at any appropriate university in the United
States or abroad.
